Resources for Reading and Listening

So here are some resources that will help you with reading and listening

Good luck!

The British Council

The British Council are an organisation that have been a first port of call for thousands of teachers over the past couple of decades. I myself achieved more than one successful lesson with their up-to-date (which means relevant) resource library and worksheets.

These days it's even better because activities and articles etc. are often given levels (A1, B1 etc.) so you can find something suitable for yourself.

The Conversation

The reason I started using this website was that I became tired of following fake news. The articles are linked to the original research so if you want to read about the subject in more depth (or at a higher level) it is literally just a click away.

Organised into easy to follow categories - its a simple way to stay up-to-date with current affairs and not get taken away by fake news or clickbait.

There is also a linked podcast

BBC - 6 minute English (listening)

It's organised into levels (beginner for e.g.) and the topics are up-to-date.

You can...

- download the PDF

- Find the vocabulary from the podcast

- download the audio

- find a link to grammar (BBC)

- find a link to many resources such as pronunciation

Sight Words

This site has a lot of resources for making games (the old fashioned way).  It also has a lot of help with general pronunciation (Aussprache und Ton)

BBC podcasts

There are hundreds of resources now for downloading podcasts on the internet. For me the most comprehensive including shows such as

'In our Time' which having been running for 20 years on the radio, and have reading links. Another example is 'Business daily' which keeps you up-to-date with business news.

The English Theatre Hamburg

The English Theatre creates study guides for each play. This material is intended for English teachers for educational purposes and is available free of charge at this website to download

ABC news - Dr Karl

This is an example of an excellent podcast in in non UK/USA  English. Attuning our ear to different accents is fundamental to becoming a fluent English user - far too many people focus on just UK or USA accents but the fact is, the world just isn't made like this - ask any Asian or Scandinavian!
